Kansas City approves $1.5 billion for water main, sewer improvements
(UI) — Kansas City voters have approved $1.5 billion in bond funding to support major water and sewer infrastructure improvements, providing KC Water with financing for capital projects aimed at modernizing aging utility systems and meeting federal wastewater requirements.
According to the Kansas City Star, the package includes two separate $750 million bond measures—one dedicated to water system improvements and the other to sanitary sewer upgrades. According to city officials, the funding will help address nearly $2.9 billion in planned capital improvements over the next five years while reducing the need for more costly financing that could have resulted in higher customer rates.
Water bond proceeds will support KC Water's ongoing Water Main Replacement Program, which targets replacement of approximately 28 miles of aging water mains annually to improve system reliability and reduce main breaks. Sewer funding will be used for sewer main rehabilitation, pump station improvements and additional green infrastructure projects, Kansas City Star reported.
The sewer investments also support KC Water's ongoing compliance with a federal consent decree requiring upgrades to the city's wastewater system to reduce untreated sewer discharges and address Clean Water Act violations. City officials said both bond measures received approximately 80% voter approval.
