N.Y. approves $434 million for water, sewer infrastructure projects
(UI) — New York has approved $434 million in financing and grants for water and sewer infrastructure projects across the state, including $361 million for major drinking water and wastewater projects in New York City.
The New York State Environmental Facilities Corporation (EFC) Board approved a combination of low-cost financing and state and federal grants aimed at helping municipalities modernize aging infrastructure while limiting costs passed on to ratepayers. The latest approval allows communities that have completed required environmental reviews and other program requirements to enter funding agreements and access project funds.
New York City's $361 million allocation supports 11 projects, including excavation and construction of two shafts for City Tunnel No. 3 in Queens and construction of a second water conveyance tunnel between Kensico Reservoir and the Catskill/Delaware Ultraviolet Disinfection Facility. Funding will also advance wastewater treatment and pump station projects aimed at improving system reliability and reducing combined sewer overflows.
Elsewhere in the state, funded work includes replacement of more than 10,700 ft of sanitary and storm sewer in Corinth; 2,000 ft of water main and related drinking water improvements in Pawling; and approximately 14,000 ft of new water main in Lorraine. North Tonawanda also received funding for separate storm sewers and green stormwater infrastructure.
“Affordability means investing before problems become crises,” Gov. Kathy Hochul said. “That's why we're making historic investments to help communities modernize their water infrastructure, protect public health and keep costs low for families across New York.”
