The Woodlands, Texas, makes bid for Musk-backed tunnel project
(UI) — The Woodlands Township Board of Directors has authorized staff to submit a proposal to The Boring Company’s national “Tunnel Vision” Challenge, a competitive process that could result in the construction of a tunnel system in Town Center at no cost to the Township, according to Hello Woodlands.
During its Feb. 19 meeting, the Board approved a draft letter of support and project concept in response to the company’s request for proposals. If selected, the project could include up to one mile of underground tunnel infrastructure measuring approximately 12 feet in diameter.
Township officials outlined a concept called “The Current,” which envisions two parallel tunnels beneath the Town Center corridor near The Waterway. The proposed system would be designed to move passengers in electric vehicles, creating a grade-separated transportation option aimed at reducing congestion during peak traffic periods and major events.
The route would link high-traffic destinations such as Waterway Square, The Woodlands Waterway Marriott Hotel & Convention Center, Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion and Town Green Park, with the potential for future expansion to Hughes Landing. The objective is to improve circulation within the district while offering a zero-emission alternative to surface travel.
Township staff indicated that the current phase is limited to preparing and submitting the proposal, coordinating with stakeholders and conducting preliminary outreach and due diligence. Any formal agreements, permitting plans, financial considerations or detailed project scope would return to the Board for approval if the Township’s submission is selected, as reported by Hello Woodlands.
Proposals for the Tunnel Vision Challenge were due Feb. 23, and the process is described as competitive.
