$52.5-million Great Pond sewer project advances with construction set for early 2026
Construction on the Phase 1 Great Pond sewer expansion project is scheduled to begin in early 2026, with updated estimates showing the total project cost has dropped by more than $7 million from the original $60 million approved by voters. According to CapeNews.net, town officials now estimate the project will cost approximately $52.5 million, reflecting favorable bid results and refined planning.
The project will extend sewer service to portions of the Maravista and Teaticket peninsulas and includes construction of a new lift station on Brick Kiln Road, along with force mains to convey wastewater to the treatment facility on Blacksmith Shop Road. Sewer expansion is a key component of the state-approved Great Pond Targeted Watershed Management Plan, which aims to reduce nitrogen loading and protect water quality in the impaired watershed.
Excess nitrogen from septic systems and other sources has contributed to low oxygen levels and harmful algal blooms in Great Pond. Town officials say expanding sewer service and upgrading treatment capacity are among the most effective strategies to meet state nitrogen limits, alongside other measures such as fertilizer controls, reactive barriers, aquaculture, and alternative wastewater technologies.
Two major construction contracts have been awarded, CapeNews.net reported. CC Construction of South Dennis received a $16.7 million contract for the lift station and force mains, while RJV Construction of Canton was awarded a $16.9 million contract for the sewer collection system. Additional project costs include engineering, contingencies, police details, grinder pump procurement, and utility coordination.
Construction is expected to begin in February or March 2026 and take approximately 21 months, with completion targeted for fall 2027. Town officials will continue hosting homeowner information sessions in advance of construction to address connections, betterment assessments, and project logistics.
