Race Communications breaks ground on Bakersfield fiber network
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (UI) — Race Communications has begun construction on a fiber-optic network in Bakersfield, part of a broader effort to expand broadband infrastructure across Kern County.
The project is expected to deliver service to more than 50,000 homes and businesses, with initial connections planned by late summer 2026.
The buildout will include fiber-to-the-home infrastructure capable of delivering speeds of up to 10 gigabits per second, increasing capacity in a region seeing continued population and economic growth.
Jim Miller, vice president of government affairs at Race Communications, said the expansion builds on the company’s existing footprint in the area.
“Bakersfield is a growing city that needs infrastructure to support long-term demand,” Miller said. “This expansion builds on our network across Kern County.”
Race said it already serves a large portion of the county and has invested more than $650 million across California, with an additional $200 million planned for 2026.
The Bakersfield project reflects a broader trend of fiber deployment in growing markets, where providers are expanding underground infrastructure to improve reliability, increase speeds and compete for new customers.
