1,600-mile Florida fiber network nears completion
(UI) — Conexon Connect is nearing completion of a 1,600-mile fiber-optic network in rural Florida that will provide broadband service to more than 14,000 homes and businesses across four counties.
The project, developed in partnership with Glades Electric Cooperative, spans Glades, Hendry, Highlands and Okeechobee counties. Final construction work is underway in select areas, with the network expected to become the company's 14th completed fiber-to-the-home project nationwide.
According to Conexon Connect, the system will deliver multi-gigabit internet service and support utility communications infrastructure used by the electric cooperative. The network is also expected to improve communications between substations, offices and grid-connected devices.
Randy Klindt, CEO of Conexon Connect, said the project reflects continued efforts to expand fiber broadband access in underserved rural communities.
“The completion of our third fiber network in Florida reflects the power of strong local partnerships,” Klindt said. “Together, we're expanding reliable fiber internet access for rural Floridians.”
Michael Roberge, CEO of Glades Electric Cooperative, said the fiber network will support both broadband connectivity and utility operations.
“In addition to closing the digital divide for our cooperative members, the network will help strengthen communications across our electric system,” Roberge said.
Conexon Connect said the project expands its Florida footprint to more than 40,000 homes and businesses. Nationwide, the company is involved in more than 20 fiber-to-the-home projects across seven states that are expected to serve nearly 500,000 locations when complete.
