John Deere expands excavator lineup with new P-Tier 20-ton models

John Deere has launched a new generation of midsize excavators aimed at utility, trenching and underground construction applications where control, visibility and productivity are critical.

The new P-Tier lineup debuts with three 20-metric-ton models — the 210, 230 and 260 — designed for tasks such as pipe installation, trench excavation, grading and craning in confined or complex jobsites. According to the company, the machines were developed using extensive field testing and contractor input to address common challenges faced by utility crews, including hydraulic responsiveness, attachment management and operator visibility.

From an application standpoint, the excavators feature updated hydraulic systems intended to deliver smoother, more predictable control during trenching and lifting operations. Multiple performance modes allow operators to tailor machine response for digging, lifting or fuel-efficient operation, while adjustable hydraulic settings help match machine behavior to varying soil conditions and job requirements.

Operator visibility and situational awareness were also a focus in the redesign. The excavators are equipped with an updated in-cab display that integrates machine diagnostics, attachment controls and camera views, supporting safer operation around existing utilities and personnel. Optional camera systems, object detection and virtual fencing features are designed to help reduce strike risks and protect both the machine and surrounding infrastructure.

For utility contractors running multiple attachments, the new machines support attachment configuration and tracking through an integrated management system. This allows operators to store settings for different tools — such as buckets, compactors or lifting devices — and maintain consistent performance when switching between tasks. Grade control capabilities are included as standard, with upgrade paths available for more advanced applications requiring higher precision.

Remote access and diagnostics tools are also built into the platform, allowing dealers or authorized personnel to view machine settings and assist with troubleshooting without being on site — a feature aimed at minimizing downtime on active utility projects.

The P-Tier midsize excavators are backed by John Deere’s dealer network and are positioned to support contractors working in underground utility installation, rehabilitation and municipal infrastructure projects where reliability, control and jobsite efficiency are essential.
