Strategic merger unites Mi-Tech and J.D. Hair, strengthening trenchless infrastructure delivery
Mi-Tech Services and J.D. Hair & Associates have joined together through a strategic merger that unites trenchless, geotechnical, structural, and utility-engineering capabilities under a single platform. The combined organization will operate as Mi-Tech, part of the Michels Family of Companies, and will immediately serve clients with an expanded mix of design, surveying, laboratory, and construction-support services.
Industry leaders described the move as a consolidation of complementary expertise that has grown alongside North America’s underground-utility markets. Mi-Tech traces its roots to 1985 and has matured to more than 200 employees across eight offices, delivering telecom, energy, and municipal-infrastructure engineering. J.D. Hair & Associates, founded in 1987 and acquired by Michels in 2021, is recognized for pioneering horizontal directional drilling (HDD) design and pressure-pipeline engineering, and brings a team of 35 specialists to the alliance.
Michels Corporation President & CEO Pat Michels said the merger broadens options for alternative project delivery while reinforcing constructability and efficiency. Babich has been appointed President of Mi-Tech following Babich’s appointment as President of Mi-Tech, retaining all employees from both firms to ensure continuity of service and preservation of institutional knowledge for ongoing and future rehabilitation projects.
Commissioners and utility stakeholders expect the newly integrated firm to play a larger role in pressure-pipeline replacement, sewer inspections, and water-quality-driven expansions nationwide. The merger positions Mi-Tech to tackle complex, multifaceted underground projects—from HDD crossings to trunk-sewer upgrades—with greater resources and a unified engineering approach aligned with the next decade of infrastructure investment.
