San Luis Obispo begins water transmission main replacement project
(UI) — San Luis Obispo, Calif., has begun replacing an aging water transmission main as part of its 2026 sewer and water improvement program, upgrading critical infrastructure that has served the community since the 1960s.
The project will replace approximately 1,660 feet of 16-inch cast iron water main along California Boulevard and Taft Street with new 16-inch ductile iron pipe. City officials said the replacement is intended to improve system reliability and reduce the risk of costly emergency repairs.
Construction is underway and is expected to continue for four to six months, KSBY News reported. Work is being performed weekdays, with officials anticipating primarily temporary traffic impacts while maintaining access for motorists and pedestrians.
The water main replacement is part of the city's broader effort to modernize aging underground infrastructure and improve the long-term reliability of its water distribution system.
