W.A. Chester lands major underground transmission project in Miami Beach
(UI) — W.A. Chester, a division of United Utility Services (UUS), has been awarded a contract to install a new 230-kV high-pressure fluid-filled (HPFF) underground transmission circuit connecting two substations in Miami Beach. The approximately three-mile project is scheduled to begin in 2026 and continue through 2028.
The transmission upgrade is designed to improve long-term electric grid reliability, increase system resilience and support future regional power demand. Construction will include multiple over-water horizontal directional drill (HDD) crossings, subsea jetting operations, open-trench installation of 10-inch steel pipe, floating pipe assembly, HPFF cable installation, splicing, fluid-line modifications, commissioning and final energization.
W.A. Chester said it will leverage its experience delivering submerged HPFF transmission installations, including underwater pipe assembly and river-crossing projects. The work reinforces the company's position in complex underground and submarine electric transmission construction across North America.
The new feeder circuit is expected to strengthen transmission reliability for the utility provider while enhancing the resilience of the regional electric network through modern underground infrastructure.
