Drainage project enters next phase in West University Place, Texas
(UI) — West University Place is preparing to rebid a portion of its East Side Drainage Improvement Project after construction challenges prompted the city to separate the remaining work from the current contract.
The project stems from a citywide drainage modeling study completed in 2019 that found much of the existing stormwater system has limited capacity, with some areas unable to handle storms exceeding a two-year rainfall event. The improvements are intended to increase drainage capacity while reconstructing aging roadways.
The second phase of the project includes drainage and paving improvements along Wakeforest Avenue, Rice Avenue and Duke Street. Construction on Rice Avenue and Duke Street was completed in March 2026. City officials said the remaining Wakeforest Avenue segment will be rebid following issues encountered during the earlier phase of construction.
According to the project schedule, bidding for the Wakeforest work is expected to begin in July, with a construction contract anticipated in September. Construction is expected to start this fall and continue for approximately one year.
The East Side Drainage Improvement Project is part of the city's broader effort to modernize stormwater infrastructure and improve roadway drainage as development and runoff demands continue to increase.
