South Dakota approves $54.8 million for water, wastewater infrastructure projects
(UI) - South Dakota's Board of Water and Natural Resources (DANR) has approved nearly $54.8 million in loans and grants to support water, wastewater and solid waste infrastructure projects across the state, including a major wastewater treatment plant upgrade in Sioux Falls and sewer system improvements in Hecla.
The largest award is a $51.9 million Clean Water State Revolving Fund loan for the City of Sioux Falls to replace and modernize aging infrastructure at its Water Reclamation Facility. The project includes new clarifiers, sludge pumping systems and splitter boxes designed to improve treatment capacity and long-term system reliability.
The board also approved a $2.5 million Clean Water State Revolving Fund loan for the town of Hecla to rehabilitate its sanitary sewer collection system. The project will replace or reline approximately 1,250 feet of sewer main and upgrade an existing lift station. Of the total loan, $2 million will be forgiven through the program.
In addition, Shared Resources received an extra $206,749 in American Rescue Plan Act funding for its regional water infrastructure project serving the Minnehaha Community Water Corporation and Big Sioux Community Water System. The project includes construction of a water treatment plant, well field, distribution pipeline and two storage tanks. The latest award increases total ARPA funding for the project to more than $51.1 million.
The board also approved a $250,000 Solid Waste Management Program grant to the South Dakota Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources to support the cleanup and disposal of PFAS-containing fire suppression products, waste tires, hazardous chemicals and other solid waste.
The funding package includes approximately $52.4 million in low-interest loans, $2 million in principal forgiveness and nearly $457,000 in grants administered through the South Dakota Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources.
