Long Beach, Calif., trench collapse kills construction worker at shelter project
A construction worker was killed and two others were injured after a trench collapsed at a shelter expansion project in Long Beach, according to Long Beach Post report.
The incident occurred at the Long Beach Rescue Mission’s Lydia House facility while crews were installing electrical conduit connected to the nearly completed expansion project. Officials said three workers were inside or near a trench when part of the wall collapsed, trapping them beneath soil and debris.
Fire crews responded shortly before 5:45 p.m. and rescued the workers from the excavation area. Two injured workers were transported to a local hospital, while one worker later died from injuries sustained in the collapse. Authorities identified the deceased worker as 54-year-old Martin Rodriguez.
As reported by Long Beach Post report, the incident remains under investigation by local officials and California Division of Occupational Safety and Health inspectors. Construction on the project has been temporarily halted while investigators review the circumstances surrounding the trench failure.
