Worker killed in foundation tunnel collapse near Dallas; OSHA investigating
(UI) - A construction worker was killed after a tunnel beneath an apartment building foundation collapsed Thursday afternoon near Coppell, Texas, prompting a multi-agency rescue response and an ongoing investigation by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
According to Dallas Fire-Rescue, workers were manually excavating a tunnel beneath the foundation of an apartment building as part of a concrete-pouring operation when the collapse occurred. The incident trapped a worker beneath the structure, while the building itself remained standing.
Dallas Fire-Rescue's Urban Search and Rescue team responded alongside the Coppell Fire Department and other emergency agencies, Dallas Express reported. Rescue crews entered the building, cut through the concrete floor and removed several feet of soil to reach the trapped worker. The victim was pronounced dead after being extricated from the collapse site.
OSHA and the Dallas County Medical Examiner's Office are investigating the incident. Authorities have not released the worker's identity, and investigators are continuing to review the circumstances surrounding the collapse, including whether any workplace safety violations contributed to the fatal accident.
