San Antonio sewer main collapse triggers spill after heavy rain
SAN ANTONIO (UI) — A collapsed sewer main triggered a wastewater spill in San Antonio after heavy rainfall weakened underground infrastructure, prompting emergency response efforts by San Antonio Water System crews.
The incident occurred near the intersection of Bicentennial Road and Interstate 10 East, where a 24-inch concrete sewer main failed after being inundated by stormwater.
Crews established a temporary bypass to maintain service and contain the release while repair work continues at the site.
Officials said rainfall diluted the spill, helping reduce its impact, though the volume exceeded thresholds that require public notification.
The failure highlights ongoing challenges tied to aging sewer infrastructure and stormwater surges. The utility has invested more than $1 billion in system upgrades in recent years as part of a long-term effort to improve reliability and reduce overflows.
