Texas water pipeline project faces questions over permitting authority
Corpus Christi is continuing construction on a major water pipeline project as county officials question whether the city can proceed without formal county approval.
The project is designed to transport water from the Nueces County Western Well Fields to the O.N. Stevens Water Treatment Plant through a roughly 13-mile pipeline. According to KRIS 6 News, city officials said the line is expected to deliver up to 24 million gallons per day by the end of the year, a key target tied to delaying additional drought-related water restrictions.
The dispute centers on whether the city needs authorization from Nueces County to install the pipeline within county right-of-way areas. Corpus Christi officials maintain state law allows utilities to place infrastructure within the right of way without separate county approval, while county leaders said legal questions remain unresolved.
County officials also cited concerns raised by rural residents regarding pipeline impacts and project coordination. Despite the disagreement, KRIS 6 News reported, construction remains on schedule as county attorneys continue reviewing the issue ahead of an upcoming commissioners court meeting.
