La Grange, Ill., secures $2 million for stormwater detention project
(UI) — Senator Mike Porfirio announced at a La Grange Village Board meeting that the State has allocated $2 million in funding for an underground stormwater detention project at Lyons Township High School – North Campus. This initiative is aimed at addressing stormwater challenges in the Village’s North Basin, specifically north of 47th Street.
Senator Porfirio and Senate Majority Leader Kimberly Lightford collaborated to secure the funding, recognizing the critical need for stormwater relief in the area.
“We are immensely grateful to Senator Porfirio and Leader Lightford for their dedicated advocacy on behalf of La Grange residents,” said President Mark Kuchler. “Their efforts have significantly advanced our ability to proceed with this crucial project.”
Last summer, the high school approached the Village to explore the feasibility of incorporating increased underground detention into plans for installing turfgrass on its West Field. Village staff and consulting engineers reviewed the proposal and determined that expanding underground detention would substantially mitigate flooding in the region.
The proposed $8.9 million project includes the construction of 10-acre feet of underground stormwater detention. The Village is actively pursuing additional funding sources to complete the financing for this essential infrastructure project.
