Georgia senator pushes bill to upgrade Columbus water infrastructure
(UI) — U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff has introduced the Georgia Stormwater Management Act to enhance water infrastructure for Columbus residents and businesses.
The proposed legislation would enable the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to undertake water infrastructure projects in the Columbus area, aiming to improve quality of life and resilience.
“I remain focused on the Chattahoochee Valley every day,” said Sen. Ossoff. “I’ve heard consistently from local leaders about concerns with aging water infrastructure, which is why I’m introducing this new bill that would authorize the U.S. Army Corps to work on vital water infrastructure projects across Columbus.”
The bill follows a significant water main break earlier this year that left hundreds of Columbus families without access to clean water.
Sen. Ossoff has been active in strengthening Georgia's infrastructure. Last month, he and Senator Rev. Warnock announced $1 million in funding through the bipartisan infrastructure law to expedite the cleanup of hazardous materials in Columbus. In 2022, Sen. Ossoff successfully passed the Chattahoochee River Act, empowering the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to work on water projects along the Chattahoochee River throughout Georgia.
