September 2023 explosion in Colorado caused by underground electric cable damage
(UI) – Colorado Public Radio (CPR) is reporting that a September 2023 explosion downtown was most-likely caused by underground electric cable damage. The explosion caused “significant damage” that left nearly 300 people without power for several days, CPR reported.
Colorado Spring Utilities said a private contractor drilled underground without following pre-dig protocols. A representative for the utility said the incident is prompting them to “re-emphasize education efforts with local contractors.”
Investigators located three potential drilling points that could have caused the explosion. To prevent further accidents, the utility will be using new underground technology on electric cables to better “isolate a damaged cable from the rest of the system” to keep power flowing in the event of disruption.
