Pipeline failure triggers water emergency in Central Texas

(UI) — A pipeline failure in Central Texas has forced Pflugerville officials to declare a local disaster after the break disrupted the raw water supply feeding Lake Pflugerville, the city’s primary drinking water source, according to reporting from Chron.

City leaders warned that the lake’s water level could drop below the municipal intake structure within weeks if the situation is not stabilized. Engineering projections cited in the emergency declaration indicate the lake could fall below the intake by mid-April, creating an immediate threat to the city’s water system.

In response, the city implemented Stage 3 water restrictions, banning most outdoor water use including lawn irrigation, car washing and filling swimming pools. Recreational access to Lake Pflugerville — including boating, fishing and swimming — has also been temporarily suspended as officials work to conserve remaining water supplies.

To stabilize the system, crews are installing a temporary pipeline to restore water flow to the lake while permanent repairs are developed. Additional groundwater wells are being activated and officials are coordinating with Manville Water Supply Company to supplement the city’s supply, according to officials cited by Chron.

Local leaders said the restrictions will remain in place while repairs are completed and lake levels recover. As reported by Chron, city officials expect the temporary bypass pipeline could be operational within days if weather conditions allow construction crews to complete the work on schedule.
