Scranton, Pa., water mains to be replaced in Abington upgrade project
(UI) — Pennsylvania American Water is preparing to replace more than 3,500 feet of aging water mains in the Abington area as part of a project aimed at improving service reliability and water flow for firefighting.
Crews will begin work the week of April 21 in Clarks Summit and South Abington Township. The upgrades will involve installing six- and eight-inch ductile iron pipes to replace smaller, decades-old mains along the following streets:
- Vosburg Lane, Clarks Summit
- Stonybrook Road, Clarks Summit
- Sumner Avenue, South Abington Township
Final paving and restoration are slated for completion in the fall.
“Providing reliable service to our customers means making continuous investments in our infrastructure,” said Zach Frishko, senior supervisor of operations for Pennsylvania American Water. “We prioritize projects based on number of criteria, including the need for larger mains to handle system demands, age of existing pipe and history of main breaks or service interruptions.”
While work is ongoing, residents may notice temporary changes in service such as low water pressure, discolored water, or short-term outages. Pennsylvania American Water said crews will work quickly to minimize disruptions.
The new ductile iron mains will replace infrastructure dating back to the 1960s. According to the utility, these upgrades are part of ongoing efforts to improve water quality, reduce service interruptions, and modernize aging underground infrastructure across the region.
