Massive water main break in Chicago suburb leads to sky-high geyser
A 48-inch water main was hit by a construction crew in Chicago's Norwood Park Township, sending a huge geyser of water shooting into the sky, CBS News Chicago reported.
The incident happened earlier this week, when an engineering firm drilling in the area accidentally hit the water main and caused it to burst.
The main feeds parts of DuPage County, according to the Norwood Park Protection District.
Crews from the Chicago Department of Water Management, responsible for the unincorporated area, quickly responded to the scene to shut off the flowing 48-inch water main early Monday evening.
According to CBS News Chicago, the break caused quite a scene, with area residents coming to see the huge geyser of water, some comparing it to Vegas' Bellagio fountain.
Crews were able to quickly and successfully shut down the valves, and will start repair work after evaluating the break. While a water main break typically leads to a boil notice for the area, no service was disrupted from the incident, crews reported.
Coincidentally, the incident occurred on August 11, which is designated as the National 811 Day, part of a national campaign to raise awareness on safe digging, and as a reminder for contractors to call 811 before beginning any digging projects.
