Trenchless industry pioneer Maynard Akkerman dies at 69
BROWNSDALE, Minn. — Akkerman Inc. and the trenchless technology community are mourning the loss of Maynard Carl Akkerman, a trenchless industry pioneer and longtime leader of Akkerman Inc. He passed away peacefully on July 19, 2025, surrounded by family. He was 69.
Akkerman, known for his integrity, humility, and dedication to advancing trenchless technology, led Akkerman Inc. into global prominence. He began his career in the underground construction field at age 15, working part-time for his family’s company, D.H. Akkerman Construction Co. In 1987, he and his wife Robin purchased Akkerman Inc., transforming it into a leading manufacturer of trenchless equipment.
Under his leadership, Akkerman Inc. became the first North American company to manufacture slurry microtunneling systems and contributed to award-winning infrastructure projects throughout the U.S. and beyond. He was widely respected not only for his technical innovations but for building a company culture based on respect, mentorship, and customer care.
“He treated customers like family, earning long-term partnerships and friendships across the world,” the company said in a statement.
Akkerman’s impact on the trenchless industry extended far beyond his company. His career included leadership roles and contributions to professional standards in trenchless technology and microtunneling. He served on the NASTT Board of Directors, the ASCE Microtunneling Standards Committee, and the ASCE Blue Ribbon Committee for Pilot Tube and Guided Boring Guidelines.
His numerous honors include:
- NASTT Hall of Fame (2019)
- Microtunneling Achievement Award (2016)
- The Moles Inductee (2009)
- Trenchless Technology Person of the Year (2008)
- Underground Construction MVP (2003)
Akkerman also remained active in local business development and gave back to his community through service with the Development Corporation of Austin, the Austin and Minnesota Chambers of Commerce, and the Enterprise Minnesota Manufacturing Advisory Board.
He is remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and mentor. His son, Justin Akkerman, now leads the company, continuing the values his father instilled: innovation, integrity, and treating every customer like family.
