Metrolinx invites public to name tunnel boring machines for Ontario Line
(UI) — Metrolinx is calling on the public to help name the first two tunnel boring machines (TBMs) set to excavate the downtown section of the Ontario Line subway project.
The TBMs, recently delivered to Canada, will dig twin tunnels between just east of Exhibition Station and west of the Don River—part of a major new transit corridor through Toronto. The machines will begin their underground work in the city’s southern segment of the Ontario Line, one of the most complex sections of the project.
As part of a public engagement campaign, Metrolinx has opened an online naming contest through June 23, 2025. Submissions are open to individuals and school classes. The agency encourages name ideas inspired by local landmarks, notable figures, or community heritage. Paired names are also welcome.
A shortlist of finalists will be published for public voting following the submission period. Winners will be credited and invited to a photo opportunity with the TBMs at the tunnel launch site.
The TBM naming contest adds a creative, public-facing element to a significant tunneling project. The Ontario Line is a major addition to Toronto’s transit network and one of Canada’s most high-profile urban tunnel builds.
