New Jersey American Water to replace 3,200 feet of transmission main in Somerville
(UI) — New Jersey American Water is set to install 3,200 feet of new 30-inch water transmission main and replace 2,200 feet of aging 10- and 12-inch pipe in Somerville. Construction begins this week and is expected to wrap up by the end of July.
Work will take place along Veterans’ Memorial Drive West from South Davenport Street to Somerset Street, Mountain Avenue from Somerset Street to West Cliff Street/Altamont Place, and Somerset Street from Route 206 to Mountain Avenue. The project aims to reinforce the system and prevent future water main breaks.
The new transmission main will support a neighboring line that has experienced two breaks in recent years. An inspection revealed the need for replacements, which were completed in December 2024. This next phase will focus on rehabilitating and reinforcing the system.
“This $6.2 million investment is part of our continued commitment to upgrading critical water infrastructure and improving service reliability for our customers,” said Carmen Tierno, senior director of Operations for New Jersey American Water’s Central Operating Region. “Once completed, these improvements will provide reinforcement and resiliency to this system which serves over 50 municipalities in this region.”
Vollers Excavating, Inc., a local contractor, will handle construction. Work hours are set for 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, with some night work expected on county roads. Final street restorations will take place in fall 2025.
Traffic restrictions and alternating patterns may occur, but Veterans’ Memorial Drive West, Mountain Avenue, and Somerset Street will remain open.
