Los Osos, Calif., water pipeline project still on hold as Army Corps delays approval
Plans for a long-planned water pipeline that would ease Los Osos, Calif.’s reliance on groundwater remain stalled as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has yet to approve funding, according to KSBY News.
Although the pipeline has already cleared federal authorization, funding cannot be released until the Corps signs off on the project. The proposed pipeline would connect the community of 14,000 to the state water project, reducing its reliance on groundwater wells, which are currently its sole source of drinking water.
According to the Los Osos Community Services District, officials have contacted the Corps several times since December seeking an update, but have yet to receive a response.
Congressman Salud Carbajal recently pushed the issue forward, sending a letter to the Corps on April 24 urging the project’s inclusion in this year’s work plan. He noted the project’s importance in ensuring a stable water supply for the town, KSBY News reported.
If the funding is approved, the district will still need to negotiate with San Luis Obispo County over the allocation of state water once the pipeline is complete.
