Large-diameter sewer rehab begins on Central Row in Hartford, Conn.
(UI) — The Metropolitan District (MDC) began work this week on its Large-Diameter Sewer Rehabilitation Phase 3A project in downtown Hartford, focusing initially on the Central Row corridor.
The first phase of the effort, between Main Street and the Prospect Street intersection on Central Row, will include test pits, manhole lining and replacement of a portion of the sanitary-sewer main originally built in the 1800s. Work is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday over about three weeks, with eastbound vehicular traffic on Central Row closed during work hours. Pedestrian access and business operations will remain open.
A second phase will begin in early December on Market Street from Kinsley to State Street, and a third phase is planned for Spring 2026 on Main Street, involving cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) lining and a 16-hour cure time.
MDC has coordinated the traffic plan with the City of Hartford, the Connecticut Department of Transportation and CT Transit and will deploy electronic variable-message signage and detours during the closure.
The project addresses aging brick sanitary-sewer mains installed between 1863 and 1928 and is part of an $18 million initiative covering roughly 40,000 linear feet of pipe.
