Ellicott City, Md., sewer rehab to replace exposed pipe in Bristol Channel stream
(UI) — Howard County, Md., plans to begin work in early March to stabilize and replace an exposed sewer line in a stream behind 10261 Bristol Channel in Ellicott City.
Construction is scheduled to start on or about March 9, weather permitting, and is expected to wrap up by late March 2026.
The project centers on an eight-inch asbestos cement sewer pipe that has become exposed within the stream channel. Crews will replace the existing line with a PVC pipe and install it inside a 24-inch steel casing to provide added protection against erosion and future exposure.
In addition to the pipe replacement, the county will construct step pools and grade control structures along the stream channel. Crews will also use rock and soil to stabilize the stream banks and armor the pipe.
Work will take place Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Access to the site will be via an access road off Burnside Drive. County officials said the project is not expected to affect vehicle or pedestrian traffic in the surrounding area, though signage has been posted to notify residents.
The rehabilitation effort is part of Howard County’s Department of Public Works Sewer Asset Management Program, which focuses on maintaining system reliability and reducing environmental risk.
