Subcontractor strike causes major sewer main break in Greensboro, Md.
Emergency crews responded Friday afternoon to a major sewer main break along Bridgetown Road in Greensboro, Maryland, after a subcontractor struck a large wastewater line during boring operations.
According to The Star Democrat, the incident occurred around 3:30 p.m. when Greensboro Public Works received reports of sewage water on Route 313 and Bridgetown Road. Crews later identified the damage as a break to the sewer line connecting Greensboro and Goldsboro.
Town Manager Cindy Yost said the pipeline failure required shutting down the pump station to Goldsboro and deploying vacuum trucks to manage flow while repairs were underway. Goldsboro residents were asked to conserve water during the emergency, The Star Democrat reported.
The town determined that a subcontractor working for Sure Shot Drilling had hit the sewer main and left the site after covering the damage with plywood and placing an orange flag nearby. “This is a huge sewer main. We should have been contacted. We were not,” Yost said.
Sure Shot Drilling reportedly told officials it had contacted Miss Utility, the regional line-marking service, but that the area was not marked for underground utilities. The Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) was notified due to wastewater entering a nearby creek.
Local police and emergency personnel remained on-site Friday night as repairs continued. Town officials said they expected to stabilize the line and contain the overflow by the following morning.
