Construction begins on hydrogen pipeline between Germany, Netherlands
Thyssengas has commenced the construction of a cross-border hydrogen pipeline, converting the natural gas pipeline from Vlieghuis in the Netherlands to Ochtrup in Münsterland. According to Fuel Cell Works, the project was celebrated at a groundbreaking ceremony with various stakeholders, and is part of Germany's goal to achieve climate neutrality by 2045, with hydrogen recognized as a key technology in this transition.
Following the Federal Network Agency's approval of the hydrogen core network in October 2024, the 53-kilometer conversion project will facilitate hydrogen transport, connecting it to the national network and important import ports, Fuel Cell Works reported. Thyssengas aims to deliver hydrogen to industries and distribution networks not only on the main line but also in surrounding areas.
Safety and environmental protection are critical components of this initiative. The ceremony highlighted comprehensive safety measures and provided insights into the construction process. Bundestag member Albert Stegemann praised the project for creating local opportunities and underscored the region's advantageous position for the energy transition.
Overall, the Vlieghuis-Ochtrup conversion project represents a significant stride toward a sustainable energy future in Germany.
