Buffalo breaks ground on $29.3-million combined sewer overflow project
(UI) — City officials have broken ground on a $29.3-million combined sewer overflow (CSO) project on Buffalo, N.Y.’s West Side aimed at reducing overflows and upgrading aging infrastructure.
The Breckenridge CSO project will replace existing sewers along West Avenue between Lafayette Avenue and Breckenridge Street with a new combined sewer system. Service laterals connecting homes to the main line will also be replaced from the property line to the new sewer, Spectrum News reported.
In addition, crews will install a new water main along West Avenue and replace any lead service lines encountered during construction, according to Spectrum News. The project also includes relining an existing combined sewer along Breckenridge Street to improve system performance.
Officials said the upgrades will redirect wastewater flows to the treatment plant, reducing combined sewer overflows into the Black Rock Canal.
Construction is expected to begin this spring.
