$17 million Turkey Gully drainage project targets flooding in Houston’s Greater Heights

(UI) — Houston’s long-planned Turkey Gully flood control effort in the Shady Acres neighborhood is approaching construction, with work anticipated to begin in fall 2026, according to The Leader.

The nearly $16.9 million Turkey Gully Paving and Drainage Project is intended to reduce flood exposure for homes and businesses in the Greater Heights area while also upgrading roadways and pedestrian infrastructure. The project is approximately 90% through the design phase.

Engineering plans call for rerouting stormwater from Turkey Gully into White Oak Bayou using a new conveyance path along W. 25th Street, W. 24th Street, W. 22nd Street, Bevis Street and W. 20th Street. Once completed, modeling indicates the improvements could remove 171 properties from flood risk during a two-year storm event, 238 properties during a 10-year event and 157 properties during a 100-year storm, as reported by The Leader.

The effort is part of Houston’s broader strategy to strengthen neighborhood-level stormwater systems and improve long-term flood resilience in vulnerable areas.
