“One Big Beautiful Bill” funds $889 million in western pipeline, siphon and tunnel upgrades
(UI) — A new $889 million federal investment will fund water infrastructure upgrades across the western U.S., including canal rehabilitation, pipeline replacements and storage improvements, with a significant share directed to California projects.
The funding, announced by the Department of the Interior, will support Bureau of Reclamation projects aimed at improving water conveyance systems, increasing storage capacity and modernizing aging infrastructure in several western states.
“Under President Donald J. Trump’s leadership, the One Big Beautiful Bill is delivering major new investments in Western water infrastructure,” said Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum. “These investments strengthen our nation’s water security, modernize aging infrastructure and support the farmers, communities and industries that depend on reliable water supplies. By helping ensure strong agricultural production and efficient water delivery, this investment also supports more stable and affordable food prices for American families.”
California will receive the largest share of funding, with projects focused on canal rehabilitation and subsidence repair. Work includes upgrades to the Delta-Mendota Canal, Friant-Kern Canal and San Luis Canal, along with improvements to pumping facilities and planning efforts tied to expanded water storage capacity.
Other projects across the West include pipeline replacement, siphon lining and tunnel repairs. In Utah, funding will support replacing a 110-year-old canal with an enclosed pipeline, while in South Dakota crews will repair leaking siphons serving agricultural areas. Additional work includes tunnel rehabilitation in Wyoming and water supply system upgrades in North Dakota and Idaho.
The investments are part of a broader federal effort to improve water delivery reliability and drought resilience, while extending the life of aging infrastructure systems across the region.
