Sewer line break causes underground void, closes Cinco Ranch intersection
A damaged sewer line has created a large underground void beneath a major intersection in Cinco Ranch, Texas, forcing officials to close the roadway while crews assess the extent of the infrastructure failure.
The collapse was discovered at the intersection of Westheimer Parkway and Mason Road in Fort Bend County, where authorities said wastewater escaping from the broken sewer pipe likely washed away surrounding soil, creating a cavity beneath the pavement. According to KHOU, the instability prompted officials to shut down the intersection after traffic signals began leaning due to ground movement.
Local officials said the full extent of the void remains unknown until crews remove sections of pavement and expose the damaged underground infrastructure. A temporary bypass has been installed to maintain sewer service to nearby homes while repair plans are developed, KHOU reported.
County officials estimate the intersection could remain closed for at least 30 days as crews investigate the collapse, repair the damaged sewer line and stabilize the roadway above the underground void. Drivers have been advised to avoid the area and use alternate routes while the repairs are underway.
