Louisville tunnel project proposal gains renewed attention after funding debate

(UI) - Kentucky Venues is renewing its push for a proposed underground tunnel project connecting downtown Louisville to the Kentucky Exposition Center as transportation concerns grow ahead of a planned Interstate 65 closure.

The proposed project would involve roughly three miles of underground roadway infrastructure linking major venues and event destinations across the city, WHAS11 News reported. Kentucky Venues officials said the concept is intended to improve mobility, support economic development and provide additional transportation capacity in Louisville’s urban core.

The tunnel proposal was initially introduced as part of the Kentucky Exposition Center Expansion Master Plan in 2022 but stalled after Gov. According to WHAS11, Andy Beshear vetoed $5 million in proposed state funding for a feasibility study earlier this year.

Kentucky Venues President and CEO David Beck said the organization continues to support the project, arguing the tunnel could provide a cost-effective alternative to other transportation improvements while helping connect convention, sports and entertainment destinations throughout the city.

Supporters estimate the project could cost approximately $275 million, though lawmakers may revisit funding for a feasibility study during a future legislative session.
