Maryland drops contractor on major bridge rebuild, raising timeline concerns

BALTIMORE (UI) — The Maryland Transportation Authority has removed a contractor from the next phase of the Key Bridge rebuild project and will seek new bids after determining the proposed construction cost exceeded expectations.

State officials said Kiewit Infrastructure Co. will not move forward into Phase 2 of the project following negotiations over pricing. The agency will instead return to the market to identify a new contractor for the next stage of construction.

Maryland Transportation Secretary Katie Thomson said the decision was driven by cost concerns and the need to protect taxpayer interests.

“We will continue working to ensure the project moves forward as quickly and cost effectively as possible, while maintaining safety,” Thomson said.

Officials emphasized that construction activity will continue despite the contractor change. Kiewit will remain on the project to complete Phase 1 work, which includes foundation pile driving and construction of a temporary trestle.

MDTA Executive Director Bruce Gartner said the transition will not halt progress.

“Work will not stop on the Key Bridge rebuild project,” Gartner said. “Progress will continue as Phase 1 activities move forward.”

The agency plans to host an industry forum in May to outline next steps and solicit interest from potential contractors for the next phase.
