Public Hearings Concerning Wastewater Discharge Permit Scheduled in Iowa
Iowa’s Department of Natural Resources (DNR) today announced they will hold three public hearings in March concerning a new general permit that addresses wastewater discharges to Iowa soils and streams.
At the meetings, the latest information about the new proposed requirement, a National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) general permit known as General Permit #8 (GP8), will be presented and comments will be accepted either orally or in writing. GP8 allows for discharges of hydrostatic test water (water used to test the integrity of a pipe or tank), underground storage tank ballast water (water used to weight a tank to facilitate underground installation), and water associated with installation, repair, and replacement of potable water lines. As part of the permit, the DNR is proposing to include eligibility criteria and Best Management Practices to ensure discharges comply with water quality standards.
The hearings will take place on the following dates:
- March 7, 4 p.m. at the Coralville Public Library, 1401 Fifth St., Coralville.
- March 8, 4 p.m. at the Harlan Public Library, 718 Court St., Harlan.
- March 14, 4 p.m. at the Urbandale Public Library, 3520 86th St., Urbandale.
Written comments must be submitted to Wendy Hieb, Iowa Department of Natural Resources, NPDES Section, by midnight on March 19, 2018. For more information, visit http://www.iowadnr.gov.
