Metheun Construction Recognized for Challenging Portsmouth Plant Upgrade
(UC) — Methuen Construction's work on the largest public works project in Portsmouth, NH, history helped earn the firm a place on a list of the top 200 environmental firms.
Methuen, of Plaistow, N.H., is general contractor for the $70 million upgrade of Portsmouth's Peirce Island Wastewater Treatment Plant—a project located on a Revolutionary War-era fortification site.
The project site "challenged the firm to install modern technology and larger capacity on an island site with limited access and adjacent historic presevation under way," wrote the Engineering News-Record, which ranked Methuen at No. 103 in its debut year on the Top 200 list.
The award recognized Methuen for its ability to take on environmentally sensitive projects, including a $51 million wastewater plant upgrade to bring Pittsfield, Mass., in line with EPA mandates for the Housatronic River and another $51 million project at a water pollution control facility in Vernon, Conn.
The design flow of the upgraded Peirce Island Wastewater Treatment Plant is 6.1 million gallons per day. Key components of the project included a new filter building with a biologically aerated/anoxic filter using the Kruger BioSTYR technology; a new headworks building that includes a garage, electrical room, IT room, and control room; a new solids building with the existing solids building re-purposed as an operations/lab building.
All existing treatment processes at the Peirce Island facility remained operational during construction.
