850K Gallons of Raw Sewage Spills into Catawba River
(AP) — Nearly 850,000 gallons of raw sewage spilled into the Catawba River near Old Dowd Road in North Carolina on July 16, according to Charlotte Water.
It was the largest spill of untreated wastewater in Charlotte in more than a year.
It happened as a construction crew worked near the Paw Creek Lift Station, Charlotte Water spokesman Cam Coley said.
The spill was downstream from Mountain Island Lake, the source of Charlotte’s drinking water and Coley said he did not expect the spill to affect drinking water. A no-swim advisory was issued for Paw Creek Cove on Lake Wylie.
Charlotte Water is also notifying downstream water utilities and the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control, Coley said.
Charlotte Water pumps 91 million gallons of wastewater each day, and Coley said spills of this magnitude are rare.
“This is still a very large spill and we take it very seriously,” Coley said.
