South Dakota water board grants $431 million for rural water system infrastructure upgrades
(UC) — The South Dakota Board of Water and Natural Resources approved $431 million in grants and loans for rural water systems throughout the state, DRGNews.com reported.
The funding includes $152.3 million in grants and $278.9 million in low-interest loans from the Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources, the article states.
The Mid-Dakota Rural Water system will get one of the largest shares of funding, with a $29.5 million loan, a $13.8 million loan and a $13.9 million ARPA grant. The money will be used to install a new water meter system, construct parallel pipe and improve the water treatment system, DRG News reported.
Watertown, South Dakota is getting $32 million in loan and grant funds to upgrade the city’s wastewater system, the Watertown Public Opinion reported.
The funding includes a $19.8 million loan from the Clean Water State Revolving Fund and a $12.2 million grant through the American Rescue Plan Act, the article states.
Planned projects include upgrades to seven lift stations, replacing and lining existing pipes, and wastewater treatment facility improvements.
At least 27 other communities are receiving funding from the $431 million. Projects include construction of new elevated tanks for storage, new pipeline to improve service pressure, updated waterlines to accommodate population growth and stabilization to protect from a landslide threatening a system’s water source.
