29 Lahaina properties gain access to county sewer for the first time
MAUI, Hawaii (UI) — For the first time, 29 properties on Fleming Road in Lahaina will be able to connect to the County of Maui’s sewer service.
The County’s Department of Environmental Management (DEM) Wastewater Reclamation Division is guiding property owners through the process of linking to the new service.
This connection is made possible by a federal emergency sewer project tied to the Kilohana Temporary Group Housing site. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and its contractors will begin construction on a sewer line along Fleming Road and Malo Street this month, with completion expected by December 2024.
Property owners, who previously relied on cesspools or septic systems, can now connect to the County sewer by obtaining permits from the County’s Department of Public Works Development Services Administration (DSA).
Due to restrictions on private property work, USACE will install a sewer lateral within 2 feet of the property owner’s front lot line, with a clean-out at the surface. Owners must then hire a plumbing contractor to relocate the clean-out onto their property within 2 feet of the property line. If this relocation poses difficulties, owners can contact the DEM’s Wastewater Reclamation Division at (808) 270-7417 for approval of the final location.
Property owners must also properly abandon their existing septic systems or cesspools in compliance with state Department of Health regulations.
For help with the emergency permitting process, property owners can visit the County’s Recovery Permit Center at 110 Alaihi St., Suite 207, Kahului, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., where representatives from County contractor 4LEAF Inc. are available to assist.
This emergency sewer project, which also provides temporary shelter for survivors of the August 2023 Maui wildfires, will allow County sewer service for 29 properties on Fleming Road, reducing the number of cesspools in Lahaina.
