Aecon-led team lands $1.4 billion contract to build twin subway tunnels in Toronto
(UI) — Infrastructure Ontario and Metrolinx have awarded a $1.4 billion contract to the North End Connectors consortium to design, build, and finance the advance tunneling for the Yonge North Subway Extension.
The project will add 6.3 kilometers (4 miles) of twin tunnels to extend Toronto’s Line 1 subway from Finch Station to just south of Langstaff Road in Markham. The extension will then continue at surface level.
The North End Connectors team includes Aecon Infrastructure Management Inc., Fomento de Construcciones y Contratas Canada Ltd., and Ghella Canada Ltd. EXP Services Inc. and TYPSA Inc. are leading the design, with financial advice from National Bank Financial and partners within the consortium.
Aecon confirmed the financial close of the project this week, noting that its $477 million share will be added to the company’s Construction segment backlog for Q3 2025.
“This transformative subway extension will improve access to transit for local residents, reduce travel times, support economic growth, and help to meet the needs of growing populations along the alignment,” said Jean-Louis Servranckx, President and CEO of Aecon Group Inc.

Construction includes the design and excavation of launch and extraction shafts, tunnel boring machine procurement, tunnel liner installation, and support structures for emergency exit buildings and future stations. The project was procured through a public-private partnership using Infrastructure Ontario’s Design-Build-Finance model.
Early works are already in progress, with major tunneling activity expected to begin after design completion. The full Yonge North extension will span approximately 8 kilometers and serve Markham, Vaughan, and Richmond Hill.
