Worker dies after trench collapse at sewer project site in Norwich, Conn.
(UI) — A man working on a sewer connection project in Norwich died June 13 after a trench collapsed at the job site, officials said according to WTNH.
Michael Dirocco, 60, of Norwich, was found partially buried in the excavation along Hamilton Court. Emergency crews responded to the scene around 6:15 p.m. and extricated him from the trench.
Dirocco was transported to Backus Hospital, where he later died from his injuries, authorities said.
The trench was reported to be about 90 feet long, five feet wide, and five feet deep. Workers were digging to link a private sewer system to the municipal line when the collapse occurred.
An investigation is ongoing and involves the Norwich Police Department, Fire Department, Public Utilities, and the Connecticut Department of Labor’s Division of Occupational Safety and Health, according to WTNH.
