New training program prepares workers for underground utility careers
(UI) - Drake State Community and Technical College and Huntsville Utilities have partnered to launch a new workforce development program designed to prepare students for careers in underground utility construction and operations.
The inaugural Underground Utilities Course recently concluded with a hands-on demonstration event showcasing skills learned during the three-week training program. According to 256 Today, participants earned industry-recognized certifications focused on underground water and natural gas utility operations while gaining experience with equipment operation, traffic control and field safety practices.
Program leaders said the course was developed in response to growing demand for skilled utility workers as communities across the region continue investing in infrastructure expansion and replacement projects. The training was designed to create a direct pathway from high school into utility careers while helping address workforce shortages facing the industry, 256 Today reported.
“Huntsville is experiencing a period of tremendous growth, and Drake State is growing right alongside it,” said Doug Brazier, dean of workforce development and career technical education at Drake State. “By partnering with industry leaders like Huntsville Utilities, we are ensuring that our students don’t just earn credentials, they earn a real pathway into the careers that are building the future of our city.”
Officials said the partnership is expected to continue as both organizations work to expand workforce training opportunities for future underground utility, water and natural gas professionals.
