$180 million drainage tunnel anchors $256 million California, Texas water projects

(UI) — A $180 million underground drainage tunnel project in Daly City, Calif., is the largest component of $256 million in newly awarded water and wastewater infrastructure work spanning California and Texas.

The Vista Grande Drainage Basin Improvements Project will include construction of a large underground tunnel and new stormwater conveyance structures designed to improve flow capacity and reduce flooding during heavy rainfall. The work also includes diversion structures, culverts and outfall systems to manage runoff within the basin.

Additional work in California includes construction of approximately 1.3 miles of floodwalls along the Napa River to strengthen flood protection for surrounding communities.

In Texas, the awards include work on the Walnut Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant expansion in Austin, where construction will increase capacity to 100 million gallons per day. The scope includes installation of underground piping systems and water-bearing concrete structures to support the expanded facility.

“These awards reflect the strategy we have put in place to expand our capabilities across critical infrastructure sectors,” said Ural Yal, Chief Executive Officer of Shimmick. “Water infrastructure has long been a core strength for Shimmick, and projects like these demonstrate how our teams deliver complex solutions that protect communities and support growing regions.”

“The state of Texas is a market where infrastructure investment priorities and needs closely align with our skillset and our strategic objectives,” Yal added. “We are proud to be part of this great Project that will serve the residents of Austin for many years to come.”
