WSSC Water advances $1.9-billion infrastructure, affordability budget
(UI) - WSSC Water has approved a $1.9 billion fiscal year 2027 budget that includes major investments in aging water and wastewater infrastructure, lead service line replacement and customer assistance programs.
The utility’s approved capital program allocates more than $320 million for upgrades to aging water and sewer systems, along with $34 million dedicated to replacing customer-owned lead service lines. According to WaterWorld, additional funding will support smart meter deployment, clean energy projects and system resilience initiatives across the utility’s Maryland service territory.
WSSC Water said the budget also increases financial assistance for income-constrained customers by 20%, bringing total customer assistance funding to $10.6 million. The utility serves approximately 1.9 million residents in Prince George’s and Montgomery counties, WaterWorld reported.
Officials said the spending plan is designed to balance infrastructure modernization and long-term reliability with affordability concerns as utilities nationwide continue facing rising construction costs and aging system challenges.
