Comcast expands fiber broadband rollout with Harmonic technology
(UI) — Comcast is accelerating its fiber broadband expansion with support from Harmonic’s cOS™ virtualized broadband platform and network edge devices. The initiative is designed to deliver multi-gigabit, low-latency service to both residential and commercial users, including rural communities.
In 2024, Comcast extended its network to more than one million new locations and plans to add another 1.2 million by the end of 2025.
“We are rapidly expanding our network to new areas and by leveraging Harmonic's cOS platform provides us with the flexibility to use fiber or extend our existing DOCSIS-based infrastructure to deliver critical connectivity to homes and businesses,” said Dan Rice, vice president of Access Engineering at Comcast. “Introducing multi-gigabit Internet with low lag will open up a new world of opportunities for these areas and our ecosystem of partners like Harmonic is instrumental in making that possible.”
Harmonic’s technology allows Comcast to deploy fiber services more cost-effectively while maintaining compatibility with its coaxial network. The platform integrates node-based remote switches, optical line terminals (OLTs), and Harmonic’s virtual Broadband Network Gateway (vBNG) to streamline operations and enable faster rollout timelines.
“Our partnership with Comcast is consistently driving industry progress. Comcast and Harmonic are leading the broadband industry implementing new solutions that allow networks to be expanded quickly and at scale,” said Asaf Matatyaou, senior vice president of product at Harmonic.
The companies said the collaboration also supports Comcast’s participation in BEAD-funded rural broadband projects, ensuring underserved communities gain access to high-speed internet.
